GENERAL INFORMATION The Institute of Earth Sciences (IES) is one of thirty institutes of Academia Sinica, the most important research institution in the Republic of China. IES conducts basic research in order to improve our understanding of the Earth, and applies the acquired knowledge to help with hazard mitigation and resources management. Housed in a building with more than 8,000 square meters floor space, IES is well equipped with advanced analytical instruments and computing equipment for geochemical and geophysical research. Major facilities include several isotope ratio mass spectrometers, electron microprobe, diamond anvils for high pressure experiments, Raman spectrometer, broadband digital seismometers and ocean bottom seismometers, high precision GPS receivers, superconducting magnetometers, computer workstations, and a library with the key journals. OPPORTUNITIES FOR VISITING RESEARCHERS The Institute of Earth Sciences welcomes visiting researchers for sabbaticals (4+ months) or longer term visits of up to 3 years. Research funding and appropriate salary may be provided through the National Science Council (NSC) of Taiwan, who will also cover travel expenses. If you are interested in further details, please do not hesitate to contact me by email. I am actively recruiting postdoctoral fellows. Please contact me to discuss funding opportunities if you are interested in doing post-doctoral work related to any of the areas of research described on this site. You are also welcome to propose your own ideas for research projects. Academia Sinica is a pure research institution and does not award university degrees. However, I am looking for PhD students with interests in volcanology and geochemistry, who are currently enrolled in postgraduate programs and would like to use the excellent analytical facilities available at Academia Sinica to support their research. Access to these facilities may be arranged free of charge through collaborative projects, in which an IES faculty member would act as co-supervisor. Opportunities exist for Taiwanese and international students. Please contact me if you are a PhD student interested in such collaboration, or if you are an adviser of a PhD student whose project would be significantly enhanced through additional analytical work that may be done at our institute. |
