Research Highlights:

In the past 18+ years, I have continuously played as a lead member in the CREATE (Comprehensive Research on East Asian Tectonic Evolution) integrated research project supported by the National Science Council (NSC), Taiwan and applied geochronological, geochemical and isotopic techniques to study some important petrogenetic and tectonic problems in Asia. For example, by leading one of the first and arguably the most successful research team that applied modern geochemical tools to study Tibetan tectonics related to the continental collision between India and Eurasia, I and colleagues have published some significant papers with emphasis on petrogenesis, mountain building processes and environmental impacts, which have attracted extensive attention and noticeable citations, as summarized below:

          Following a pioneer study regarding the Tibetan tectonomagmatic evolution (Chung et al., 1998, Nature), my research team has reported numerous geochronological, petrologic and geochemical data of the pre- to post-collisional magmatism in Tibet and the surrounding regions of SE Asia, to explore regional tectonics and environmental impacts related to the India-Asia collision (e.g., Xie et al., 2000, Acta Petrol. Sin.; Zhang et al., 2001, Sci. China; Li et al., 2002, IGR; Chung et al., 2003a, b, Geology; Chung et al., 2005, ESR; Lee et al., 2007, Acta Geol. Sin.; Zhu et al., 2008, IGR; Wen et al., 2008a, Lithos & 2008b, Chem. Geol.; Ji et al., 2009a, Sci.           Application of in-situ zircon U-Pb geochronology, coupled with Hf isotope analysis, using several state-of-the-art methods such as SHRIMP and LA-ICPMS, to study Tibetan igneous petrogenesis and tectonic evolution, and its influences on the topographic uplift linking as the “source-to-sink” problem to the development/reorganization of the SE Asian river system around the eastern Himalayan syntaxis (Chu et al., 2006, Geology; Liang et al., 2008, AJS; Chu et al., 2009, J. Petrol.; Ji et al., 2009b, Chem. Geol.; Wu et al., 2010, Chem. Geol.; Zhu et al., 2011, EPSL; Chu et al., 2011, EPSL; Wu et al., 2013, AJS; and work in progress).

          Following an earlier work about the Ailao Shan-Red River shearing (Chung et al., 1997, Geology), my team has also reported a series of field and thermochronological results from SW China, Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia on the collision-extrusion tectonics and crustal evolution in SE Asia (Wang et al., 1998, Geology; Lan et al., 2000, JAES; 2001, Geology; 2003, J. Geol.; Wang et al., 2000, JAES; 2001, JAES; Lee et al., 2003, EPSL; Chung et al., 2008, J. Geol.; Yeh et al., 2008, J. Str. Geol.; Lin et al., 2009a, JAES; 2009b, J.           Being the first who proposed a mantle plume initiation model for generation of the Emeishan LIP (Chung and Jahn, 1995, Geology; Chung et al., 1998, in: AGU Geodyn. Ser. 27), I’ve kept studying this important late Permian LIP via collaborations with Chinese/international colleagues and reporting new age and geochemical data for exploring the petrogenesis with regional as well as global impacts (Xu et al., 2001, Lithos; Lo et al., 2002, EPSL; He et al., 2003, EPSL; Xiao et al., 2003, IGR; Xu et al., 2004, Geology; Sobolev et al., 2008, Science; Hoa et al., 2008, CRG; Xu et al., 2010, Lithos; Anh et al., 2011, JAES; Kamenetsky et al., 2012, J. Petrol.; Pang et al., 2013, Geosci. Front.; and work in progress).

          Succeeding my thesis work (Chung et al., 1994, Chem. Geol.), to investigate the Cenozoic magmatic and tectonic evolution around Taiwan that evolved from continental extension along the Taiwan Strait to collision between the northern Luzon arc and Eurasian continent, c/w interactions with the western Ryukyu subduction system (Wang, K.-L. et al., 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004a and 2004b; Shinjo et al., 1999, JGR; Chung et al., 2000, Terra Nova; Chung et al., 2001, Lithos; Wang et al., 2012, Lithos; Wang et al., 2012, TAO; Shao et al., 2013, TAO; and work in progress esp. on in-situ zircon U-Pb and Hf isotope analyses of various rocks in Taiwan).

          As extension of the CREATE project, I have started from 2008 working on a geological “Silk Road Project” supported by the NSC and NTU to conduct a comparative study from magmatic perspectives of two “world-class” collisional zones in the Tethyan orogenic belt, i.e., Tibet/Himalaya in the east and Caucasus/Iran in the west, and to further compare these with other principal orogenic belts elsewhere for better understanding the specific as well as general features of mountain genesis. Important results obtained so far through international collaborations from the Caucasus/Iran orogen have been presented in several international/national conferences including plenary keynotes in the GSA “Tectonic Crossroads” conference, Ankara, Turkey, October 4-8, 2010 and the Chinese National Symposium on Petrology and Geodynamics, Guangzhou, December 1-6, 2013. Full research papers about the Caucasus/Iran orogen have thereby been published, in press or in review/preparation for publication in reputed international journals.
